Shared kitchen with a microwave, toaster, and induction cookers. I felt like a master chef preparing my meals amidst the cozy atmosphere and the aroma of delicious food. It was like being in my own mini culinary show!
Check-in process a bit slow.

Thoroughly enjoyed our a nice size and perfect rooms in this place.
Location: the hotel was close to historical center and both the train station and the old part of town. We stopped by Holoholo'ss for coffee and treats, it was just a short stroll away from the property. The room we had included central heating, a microwave oven, and a fridge. It overlooked garden and had a big bed.

My stay at Fish In A River was a pleasant experience. The room was in flawless condition, and the comfortable beds provided a great night's sleep. The hotel offered a choice of western beds or traditional futon beds, catering to different preferences. This flexibility was a nice touch and added to the overall comfort of the stay.
While there were no major drawbacks during my stay, one minor inconvenience was the hotel's location. Fish In A River is not situated in the historical center of Takayama, which may disappoint some travelers seeking a more centrally located accommodation.

Amazing value for money! The private room was spacious and had a beautiful view of the garden. The beds were super comfy and provided a great night's sleep. The hostel itself was peaceful, clean, and tastefully decorated.
The shared bathrooms and restrooms. Although there were only three rooms, we felt a bit uncomfortable using the shared facilities.

The room at Hostel Fish In A River was cozy and inviting, with tatami flooring and comfy Japanese futon bedding. I felt like I was truly experiencing traditional Japanese living. The shared kitchen was a great perk for making quick meals, and the in-room WiFi worked perfectly for staying connected.
Personally, I wasn't a big fan of the shower/tub combination in the bathroom. But hey, that's just me!

The super friendly hosts, Taku-san and his mom, made us feel right at home. They provided us with plenty of tips and recommendations, including a whole list of family-friendly restaurants to try. We were even able to contact Taku-san when we left behind a coat, and he quickly arranged to have it shipped to our hotel in Tokyo. The location of the guest house is great, just an 8-10 minute walk from the center of town and surrounded by bars and restaurants. Takayama itself is a laid-back town with a wonderful atmosphere and serves as a gateway to the beautiful surrounding mountains.
In my wife's opinion, the light above the bathroom mirror is not very powerful.
